Water meters that read themselves – and raise the alarm when something leaks

How do you read a thousand water meters? For a long time there were only two answers: drive around and look, or ask customers to read their own and hope they reply. Both end in the same place – estimated invoices, reconciliation after the fact, and leaks nobody notices until the bill looks absurd.

For our customers – both water utilities and property companies – everyday life looks rather different now.

The meter reports on its own

Remote-read water meters send consumption wirelessly over LoRaWAN – a radio technology built for exactly this: long range, years of battery life, and sensors that survive in meter chambers and basements without power or network cabling. The values flow into Trolle automatically, hour by hour.

No reading rounds. No notes through the letterbox. Nobody typing numbers from a soggy notebook.

The leak shows up in the curve – not on the invoice

The genuinely valuable part is not the reading itself, but what the consumption data reveals:

• Constant night-time consumption – water running at three in the morning is rarely somebody showering. It is a toilet left running, or a leak.
• Sudden jumps – a burst pipe shows up as a sharp shift in the curve, the same day it happens.
• Creeping increases – trend data across months reveals what no single reading can see.

In Trolle you set alarm levels for this – and when something deviates, alarms and work orders are created automatically, for the right person, with the property and measurement data attached. The leak is handled as an ordinary work order instead of being discovered as water damage.

Invoice actual consumption

For a water utility, automatic reading means something more as well: invoicing is based on actual consumption, not estimates to be reconciled later. And because the meter data lives in the same system as work orders and invoicing, nobody has to move numbers between systems.

The same system as the rest of the job

This is where Trolle differs from a pure metering service: the water meters live in the same system as property maintenance, work orders and time tracking. The alarm from the meter and the technician who acts on it are in the same flow – from deviation to action to invoiced hour.
